A few months ago, we learned that forgotten luggage was the main cause of delays in the Paris metro. Over the years, we’ve come across bags, sure, but also sheep, crabs, cars, skis, and even an alligator skull and a wedding dress. Well, believe it or not, in the bike-share baskets, it’s the same story, although it seems that users are a little less original.

Real Airheads

If you’re a passionate bike rider in Paris (and oh, just as we admire you if that's the case), you have probably experienced that intense moment of stress: taking a few steps only to realize that you’ve forgotten your bag in the basket, your phone in the pouch, or the gift for your best friend's birthday strapped to the rack. This sparks a race against the clock to find out if 1) someone has snatched it, or 2) even worse, if you were on a bike-sharing service, and that bike has already zoomed off with another rider. Unfortunately, considering the demand in the capital versus the number of bicycles ready to roll, this second scenario is quite likely. So much so that the company Lime collects dozens of everyday items every week, which reveal a lot about the habits and character of Parisians.

A Few Slightly Troubling Forgetfulness Moments

According to initial analyses, one thing is clear: one in three forgets something about their personal belongings in daily life, highlighting just how comfortable Parisians are with the idea of using bike-sharing, even leaving half their lives behind. And topping the top 5 most frequently forgotten items are grocery items, making up 30% of the stats. Buying milk on the way home from work is great, but remember to actually bring it home! Next on the list are coats and jackets, which represent 25% of the found items, especially in the spring (because seasons seem to have disappeared). In third place, we have recent purchases, like bags of clothing, shoes, or decor (20%). In fourth...my position, but at the top of the stress list, the laptop is at 15%. And we finish on a more romantic note, with flower bouquets, which always bring joy to the lucky recipient afterwards!
