The new design of the coins was created by the chief engraver of the Monnaie de Paris, Joaquin Jimenez. The eyes of each woman will face the same direction as la Semeuse, the iconic figure that has graced French coins for 120 years. « Called The Sowers, these three female portraits represent an allegory of the republic, emblematic symbols that illuminate us with their legacy», the engraver explains.

These coins will follow the ones that formed the first series, minted from 1998 and put into circulation since 2002. The previous coins mostly featured la Semeuse designed by Oscar Roty, surrounded by the 12 stars of the European Union flag.
