A surface area almost similar to that of New York
With a size of 758.9 km2, the "Little Rome of Gaul", renowned for its numerous historical monuments, stands as the largest city in France. It almost reaches the same surface area as New York City, which stands at 783.8 km2.

A size explained by the natural park
"But there are only 50,000 inhabitants in Arles," you might say. Compared to its American sister with 8.5 million inhabitants, the municipality in Bouches-du-Rhône seems quite small. So, what explains such a large area? The answer is simple: it's the numerous square kilometers of its Camargue Regional Nature Park. Arles is not, however, the largest French city, but the largest city in metropolitan France: Maripasoula, in Guyana, covers an area of 18,360 km2."
