The Editor

It's all part of the Horizon 2024 project, which is all about bringing new life to the biggest train station in Europe. And as part of this project, a brand new bike parking lot is being created. It will be situated under a massive empty hall right behind the station, and will have space for a whopping 1186 bikes of all shapes and sizes. That's right, even those massive bikes that don't need any pedaling, the kind we sometimes spot on the streets of the capital.

A significant delay to catch up on in Paris

At the moment, the opening date of this brand new bike hub is scheduled for June 15th. And one thing is certain, it was about time. Because for now, the capital city is clearly lagging behind other cities, with only a few small parking spots here and there at other stations.

For example, there are 70 spots at Gare de l'Est, and only 56 at Montparnasse. Gare de Lyon slightly raises the bar with its about 400 temporary spots, but we are still far from Lyon Part-Dieu and its huge parking lot with 1300 spots. The good news is that Île-de-France Mobilité has still announced...I want to set the record straight, and announce over 140,000 additional seats in the area by 2030 (compared to 22,000 currently), including 7,000 in Par.Patience is a virtue. Just have to be patient.

Child's play operation

The site, which will be monitored by a security system, will be open at the same hours as the station, from 5 am to 1 am, during which you can drop off and pick up your bikes at your leisure. The service will be free for all individuals with a Navigo pass or Imagine R. For others, it will cost €2 per day (instead of the initially announced €4, so it's better than expected), with possible weekly or yearly subscriptions.

In total, the parking will accommodate 712 regular bikes, 440 wide bikes such as mountain bikes, electric bikes, and around thirty special bikes: cargo bikes with cargo box, extended bikes, bikes with accessories (child seats, baskets, etc.). And all super well organized, with numbered aisles and illuminated indicators, to make life easier.Hey everyone! So, next time you're at Gare du Nord in Paris, don't worry about parking your bike - they've got you covered! Time to enjoy the ride! Check out these busy cyclists. A great initiative for a more bike-friendly and sustainable city!

In addition to the traditional bike racks, the hangar, whose roof will be covered with over 1100 m² of solar panels, will also have water points (super handy in summer), self-inflating machines, and even a café, which will offer bike repair services. And if that's not clever, we don't know what is. A video counting system will also indicate the number of available spaces from outside the building. We can't wait to try it all out!
