If there’s one mantra we’ve embraced, it’s that there are no small victories. In this case, starting in June, the minimum wage (SMIC) will see an increase that will surely please the French. The announcement was made on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, by Jean-Pierre Farandou, the Minister of Labor and Solidarity, on France Info. What’s behind this increase? Inflation, which has also risen, exceeding 2%.

A «mechanical adjustment» linked to inflation
Indeed, the minimum wage will increase, but the big question is by how much. Jean-Pierre Farandou revealed that it would be adjusted by 2.4% on June 1st, « a mechanical adjustment [...] linked to our French social system », he clarified. This measure is indeed correlated to the increase in inflation, which reached 2.2% year-on-year in April 2026, according to data from Insee. As soon as this figure exceeds 2%, the minimum wage is automatically increased.

A net increase of about thirty euros
Specifically, “ for an employee earning the minimum wage, this means about 44 euros gross more per month ,” which is roughly 35 euros net. This increase comes alongside other measures like the enhancement of the activity bonus — an average of 50 additional euros starting July 1st — and fuel bonuses. “ This is great news for the purchasing power of the French with modest incomes ,” the minister adds.
As of January 1, 2026, the minimum wage had already been increased by 1.18%, reaching 1,443.11 euros net monthly, compared to 1,426.30 euros in January 2025.
