Since May 4th, the Capucines Theatre has completely transformed, unveiling a free-access exhibition about the history of cosmetics and perfume. This project is clearly part of Fragonard’s efforts to celebrate its 100 years of expertise. Open your eyes and noses wide!
300 objects and 3,000 years of history
Although this exhibition is quite brief and only covers one floor, it nonetheless traces the entire history of the art of perfumery: from Ancient Egypt to the present day. You can discover precious bottles, toiletry items, and testimonies about the evolution of cosmetics in different civilizations.
Initially used to communicate with deities, then to protect against diseases, it later became a bourgeois fashion and finally a luxury item. Perfume has become a true means of self-expression, just like fashion.
In this exhibition, we bring together Grasse, the capital of fragrances, and Paris, the capital of luxury. In fact, it is through this meeting that the art of perfumery has evolved into exceptional products that we know today.

An Extraordinary Place
Having welcomed great names like Serge Gainsbourg, Barbara, and Arletty, the Capucines Theatre closed its doors in 1973. But today, Fragonard brings it back to life with a second chance, and even after years of inactivity, you can still feel the essence of this place. The carpeted floor, the stage at the center of the exhibition, the molding on the ceiling, and the softened lights continually remind us of the monument we are in.
Renovated by the Saint-Lazare workshops, just like many other Fragonard properties, the opening of this perfume theatre is part of the celebrations for the 100 years of craftsmanship of the house.
