Exciting things are happening on the Francilien network! After a delay of two years and a cost of 1.4 billion euros, the extension of the RER E is finally becoming a reality. Three new stations are opening this Monday morning, May 6: Neuilly - Porte Maillot Palais des Congrès, La Défense Grande Arche, and Nanterre - La Folie. These stations were officially inaugurated last Friday by Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who even took a ride on the RER himself between Porte-Maillot and La Défense.

Speed peaks at 120km/h

Originally planned for 2022, the extension of the RER E line came to life this Monday. The first passengers were able to enjoy this new line starting from the Haussmann - Saint Lazare station, reaching Nanterre in just 4 minutes, instead of the 20-minute minimum required until today. A huge time saver, which aims mainly to relieve the RER A and B lines, as well as the Transilien L line. However, the line will only be fully operational in 2025. For now, the new stations will only be served during off-peak hours with a train every 15 minutes, as the number of trains is currently insufficient.

A brand new look

Beyond the service, the new RER E stations showcase true «technical feats», as stated in Le Parisien.Parisian Jean-Pierre Farandou, CEO of the SNCF. The La Défense station, on one side, offers the longest escalator in France. 50 meters long for a 25 meter height difference, just like that. On the other side, the P

Orte-Maillot station has an almost futuristic look with a 120 meter long thick glass canopy, at the level of the new Maillot square, which lets natural light in up to 30 meters deep and adds a bit of warmth in the usual darkness of RER stations. In short, these new stations are "majestic," bright, and very spacious, offering a completely new experience to travelers.

And when can we expect the next part to be ready?

For now, the opening of this new section is scheduled between 10am and 4pm on weekdays, and between 10am and 8pm on weekends and public holidays. However, during the Olympic Games (from July 26th to August 11th), an additional service will be put in place with peak hour RER trains in the morning and evening. As for the rest of the line, we will have to wait until 2026 to see the RER E continue its journey towards the western outskirts of Paris, all the way to Mantes-la-Jolie.
