Congratulations! The new mom will be thrilled to know that Valérie Pécresse, president of Île-de-France Mobilité, has decided to give the newborn a free Navigo pass until they reach 18 years old. It's a super generous gesture, but it does raise some questions.

Significant Savings

If giving birth in the metro is not common, it is still a phenomenon that happens from time to time. And each time, the reward is the same. In addition to the infinite joy of becoming parents, the happy parents are offered the opportunity to save money, thanks to a free Navigo pass for the child's majority age.

And we're not going to complain about it, let's be clear, it's already a very nice gift. But we took a look at the rates of the Navigo pass for young people, and we still think that, in the end, it's not that amazing, and that the RATP could have made more of an effort by providing a lifetime blue card.

Not such a bad gift?

Indeed, between 4 and 11 years old, the Navigo pass costs a very modest sum of 24€ per year. And for the remaining 7 years, it will cost 365€ each year. This adds up to a total savings of 2723€. A nice sum, but well, once barely out of majority age, at 26 years old, the happy receiver will have to shell out, like everyone else, and this time, we're talking about 950€ per year (and this is assuming that it doesn't increase by then). So, being generous is good and all, but it shouldn't cost them too much money either.

And (once again), even though we warmly thank them for almost 3000€, we believe they could have gone a bit further than that, especially when we know that the Navigo pass is going to cost 950€ per year for them in the end. So, let's appreciate the gesture but also keep it real, folks. The pass was granted by IDF Mobility to a young girl, born no later than December 2023, in Meaux! And it's even.more limited when we know that the Navigo pass is free for all Parisians under 18 (yes, we assure you). So, life is unfair from birth...
