On November 25th last year, just a year ago, Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of the City of Light since 2014, announced that she would not run for mayor of Paris in 2026. Since then, as the elections approach rapidly, the programs from many candidates have been pouring in from all sides. While some, like Rachida Dati, are somewhat stepping away from the current policies led by the city (not surprisingly), others, on the contrary, intend to continue the fight that the mayor has been waging daily. This is the case for David Belliard, an ecological candidate, who hopes to further reduce the space for cars in the streets of Paris.

Towards a 100% pedestrian city

For a few years now, the relationships in public spaces in Paris have become significantly more complex. Indeed, we observe an increase and further strengthen regulations regarding the presence of SUVs in Paris.

A Deterrent Measure That's Hard to Implement

The aim of this new regulation is simple: to deter SUVs from driving within the city by preventing them from parking outside. According to David Belliard, this is a way to take concrete action against their presence, which can be bothersome for visibility in many cases due to their size. This regulation has also been requested by Ian Brossat, who is also a candidate (PCF), but it does have some limitations. Indeed, in practice, such a ban would be difficult to implement legally. While the city does have the right to restrict traffic for certain types of vehicles, it's necessary to define what those are first, which isn't always easy when it comes to SUVs, and also justify the regulation. o;prohibition in an objective manner. In any case, on paper, we support the project.
