On Monday, January 26, 2026, the National Assembly will examine several proposals aimed at banning social media for those under 15. This is a strong measure, reminiscent of the one adopted in Australia: in December 2025, the fifth continent prohibited the use of ten applications and platforms for those under 16.

Meanwhile, Ipsos BVA has taken a close look at the relationship between the French and social media. Interestingly — or not — the study unveiled in Figaro reveals that the majority of residents in France would be more inclined to try a month without social media than a month without alcohol, similar to the Dry January

A daily life on screen

Our lives are connected, or even hyper-connected. Among 1,000 French people surveyed in uA study by Ipsos published on January 15, 2026 found that 58% say that platforms (including social media and video platforms) play a central role in their daily lives, a figure that rises to 85% among those aged 18-34.

However, according to the latest study, 73% want to " reduce their use of social media ". What motivates this? The desire to " find time for non-digital leisure activities ", enjoy quality time with loved ones, or even improve their sleep. To achieve this, 64% are inclined to take a real digital break for a month, while about a quarter of the French population are considering doing a Dry January this year. Alcohol or social media: the French are more willing to part with their screens than their drinks. In fact,The “« Off February » has just been launched in France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States to encourage people to disconnect from social networks

The Dangers and Benefits

The relationship with social networks seems to be complex. Even though people are aware of the dangers of screens, potential pitfalls, and their impact on society, many French individuals find numerous advantages : learning, sources of pleasure, and a window to the world. On the flip side, 85% believe that platforms expose minors to serious risks, and 73% think they have a negative impact on individual behaviors.

So, what solutions do we have? The surveys are clear: 79% want a regulation of the platforms to be put in place. In addition, there are calls for moderation obligations, transparency of algorithms and AI, and a digital curfew for minors, which appeals to between 89 and 93% of those surveyed.
