Great news to start with: electricity subscriptions are being reduced starting in February. All supply contracts are affected, which should lead to an estimated annual savings of between 10 and 12 euros for households. Tolls: Highway Rates are on the Rise Again
When it comes to travel, it’s going to cost a bit more. The toll rates are increasing by 0.62% to 1.41% depending on the networks. The biggest hikes are happening in western France, especially on the Cofiroute network. This rise will particularly impact regular drivers and vacation departures.

Airline Tickets: Complicated Refunds for Travelers
Another big change for travelers: starting February 7, 2026, the process to get a refund after a canceled or significantly delayed flight is becoming stricter. Until now, a simple free request to the judicial court was enough. From now on, prior mediation is mandatory, followed by a individual summons requiring the involvement of a legal officer, making the process longer and more expensive.

Savings and Banks: Falling Rates, Rising Fees
On the savings side, regulated savings account rates are decreasing. The Livret A drops from 1.7% to 1.5%, while the Livret d'épargne populaire (LEP) falls from 2.7% to 2.5%. This decline slightly reduces the return on savings for the French.
At the same time, the consumer association CLCV warns of a general increase in banking fees, estimated to be an average of 3%. Account maintenance fees are rising by about 6%, bank cards by more than 2%, and withdrawals from a competing bank are also getting more expensive.

Municipal Elections: Final Countdown to Register for the Voter Lists
Also noteworthy: the municipal elections will take place on March 15 and 22, 2026. After a historically low turnout in the 2020 vote, voter engagement is set to rise significantly this year.
In Paris, the stakes are particularly high, especially regarding housing, transportation, security, and quality of life. To be able to vote, registration on the voter lists must be completed by February 4 online, or by February 6 at the town hall.

Cigarettes: Several packs will increase in price starting February 1st
Finally, many cigarette brands will see their prices increase starting February 1st, including Lucky Strike, Camel, Winston, Dunhill, and Vogue. This additional hike is part of the effort to combat smoking.
