Were you planning to give a fabulous bouquet of flowers to your loved one for Valentine's Day? Maybe this information will make you think twice... On Friday, February 14, 2025, UFC-Que Choisir published a study revealing a "massive contamination of cut flowers by pesticides " that could put "the health of those who handle them " at risk.

100% of flowers are contaminated

100%. According to laboratory tests conducted by UFC-Que Choisir, 100% of the tested flowers are contaminated by pesticides, “including some that are banned in Europe,” the study reports. In total, 15 bouquets of roses, gerberas, and chrysanthemums from physical stores, supermarkets, or online shops were analyzed. On a single bouquet, up to 46 different pesticide residues were detected, greatly alarming the consumer association.

A market without regulation on pesticide presence

Currently, there is no regulation governing or limiting the presence of pesticides on flowers.

Cut flowers. Many of the cut flowers come from countries where the use of highly toxic pesticides is still permitted. These substances notably contain proven carcinogens and endocrine disruptors that directly threaten the health of those who handle them on a daily basis, the study reminds us.

In 2022, an 11-year-old girl tragically passed away due to pesticide exposure that affected her and her florist mother during her pregnancy. As a result, UFC-Que Choisir is calling for several measures: strict rules on the maximum allowable pesticide residue on cut flowers, a ban on the import of flowers containing pesticides banned in Europe, mandatory labeling to inform consumers about any treatments applied to flowers, and the development of research by the National Agency for Food Safety (ANSES). So, should we really stop buying flowers? Not at all, there are safe solutions! You can especially choose French and organic flowers. A lovely way to keep giving beautiful gifts, with complete peace of mind!
