The grand project for the Paris National Opera is about to kick off! Announced last October – and backed by Emmanuel Macron – the plan for the modernization of the Palais Garnier and the Bastille Opera is becoming more concrete. The Ministry of Culture has set the budget on Tuesday, September 2nd: 450 million euros by 2032. This extensive plan will involve months of temporary closures for both venues, but the goal is clear: to provide the Paris National Opera with facilities that reflect its prestige!

The Renewal of the Palais Garnier and the Bastille Opera

The Paris National Opera is gearing up for a major facelift: modernization of the stage equipment at both the Palais Garnier and Bastille, as well as improvements to the working spaces for artists and staff, clarifies Le Parisien. The Opéra Bastille, opened in 1989, will be at the heart of the project with the creation of new spaces for workshops, exhibitions, and friendly gathering places, expected to be ready by 2030. To design these new spaces, an international architecture competition will kick off this autumn. But the work doesn't stop with the two halls; it will also involve storage workshops for Berthier's sets, located in the west of Paris, as well as the Dance School in Nanterre.

A Pricey Bill of 450 Million Euros

The modernization works will require the two grand opera houses in the capital to close one after the other for two years : the Palais Garnier from mid-2027 to mid-2029, and then the Opéra Bastille from 2030 to 2032, as announced by Culture Minister Rachida Dati. The goal? To breathe new life into these iconic places while ensuring their brilliance for decades to come.

The budget is now set at 450 million euros. A quarter will be covered by the state, with the rest funded by the Opera's own reserves and donations. Chanel is contributing 50 million euros, while BNP Paribas and its Foundation are also among the supporters. It's an ambitious renovation where art and economy harmonize beautifully.
