We were joking about it on our April Fools' Day, but it seems like the Jardin des Plantes in Paris has granted our wishes! After a long absence, the red pandas will be reintegrated into La Ménagerie starting this month of April, much to the delight of visitors. An endangered species A mix between a raccoon, a panda, and a fox, the red panda's natural habitat is found in the Himalayan forests, spanning across Nepal, India, Bhutan, China, Tibet, and Myanmar. Today, the species is in danger of extinction with a population estimated at just under 10,000 individuals, a number that continues to decline. This is why European zoos are investing in a red panda breeding program to monitor reproduction and help preserve the species.

Introducing the new red panda couple

Once, the zoo at Jardin des Plantes housed a beloved pair of red pandas adored by all visitors, willing to spend hours watching them munch on bamboo. However, for the past few months, they have been missing from La Ménagerie. Rumors were circulating that the couple had passed away, with the male even rumored to have succumbed to a fall. The good news? A new couple will be introduced in Paris: a male barely 9 months old, born in the Krakow Zoo in Poland, who will arrive on April 16th, as well as a female born last June at Fota Wildlife Park in Ireland who will arrive at the end of April. For the occasion, Jardin des Plantes has made renovations and created a multi-level space, a true playground for red pandas to be observed very soon!
