Yes, every August 15th, Mary, the Mother of God, is celebrated for the Assumption. This year, it’s another woman who performed miracles by giving birth in one of the worst train stations in Paris: Les Halles. To congratulate the young mother and properly welcome the newborn, Valérie Pécresse, president of Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM), decided to go all out by offering the infant a free Navigo pass… until they turn 18. It's a very generous offer, but there are still a few reservations about it.

Significant savings

While giving birth in the metro isn’t commonplace, it’s a phenomenon that does happen from time to time. And each time, the r&

The reward is the same. In addition to the infinite joy of becoming parents, happy new parents are offered the chance to save some money with a free Navigo pass, granted until the child's majority. That means 18 years of free and unlimited rides on the Paris metro, which just got a lovely makeover this summer.

And let's not spit in the soup, let's be clear, it's already really nice as a gift. But we took a quick glance at the prices of the Navigo pass for young people, and we think that, in the end, it's not that crazy, and that RATP could have taken the effort a bit further and provided a lifetime blue card.

A gift that's not so amazing ?

Indeed, between 4 and 10 years old, the Navigo pass costs a (very) modest €24.40 per year. And for the remaining 8 years, you need to budget €374.40 each year. So that makes a total savings of… €3166. A nice amount, but still, the lucky winner will have to pay up, just like everyone else.

where. And if, up to 26 years old, they will only pay “only” 375€, after that date, vacation is over, we're talking about 976.80€ per year (and that’s assuming it doesn’t increase by then). So, being generous is great, but let's not let it cost them too much money either.

And (once again), even though we warmly thank them for this over 3000€, we think they could have gone a little further, especially knowing that the lifetime Navigo pass was granted by IDFM to a little girl born in December 2023 in Meaux! It feels even more unfair when we realize that the Navigo pass is free for all Parisians under 18 years old (yes, really, we assure you). It just shows how life can be unfair, right from birth…
