Get your eyes ready! A shower of shooting stars is about to sweep across the summer sky and promises to turn our nights into a true cosmic show. This isn't a mirage or a trailer for the next Christopher Nolan movie: since mid-July and until mid-August, the Perseids are lighting up the sky, with a peak intensity expected on the night of August 12 to 13, featuring nearly 100 shooting stars per hour. This is sure to blow your wish quota for the next ten years!
What are the Perseids?
Are shooting stars really stars? Not quite. In reality, behind this breathtaking spectacle known as the Perseids lies dust from an asteroid or a comet, in this case, comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Every summer, the Earth crosses its cosmic path, and the dust burns up in the atmosphere, creating those bright trails that bring us so much joy.
year at the same time. A spectacular phenomenon that we love to observe while lying in the grass, neck twisted and eyes wide open.See this post on Instagram
Paris Under the Stars
To enjoy the show, forget about bright balconies or rooftops: light pollution is the number one enemy of the Perseids. It's better to treat yourself to a little night outing in green, quiet spots, or even outside the city, in the heart of the countryside. Basically, the darker, the better!
But for the city folks of the capital, you can also make the most of this amazing spectacle with the free evenings "Paris under the Stars" organized in Parisian parks by the French Astronomy Association (AFA) until September 13th. Accompanied by experienced sky-watchers, you'll learn to spot the stars and who knows, you might even catch a glimpse of the famous Perseids!
