In recent years, the capital has been working hard to go green. After the inauguration of the first urban forest in Paris in June 2024, the opening of a section of the Petite Ceinture, and the planting projects on the forecourt of the Hôtel de Ville, a new green lung is about to emerge. This year, the Colonel Fabien Square, located at the border of the 10th and 19th arrondissements, is ready to unveil its new look. The construction, which began in February 2025, is nearing completion, though not without some inconveniences for Parisians.

A more accessible and greener square

The Colonel Fabien Square in Paris has just undergone over a year of transformation. A greening process...Massive revitalization, which should be completed by spring. What’s the goal of this work? To create a balanced space to give more room to soft mobility, with numerous pedestrian areas (980 m² of pedestrian space) and over 400 meters of cycling paths.

If the square already had 41 impressive plane trees, this new project aims to multiply the number of plantings, and 79 trees have been installed at the beginning of last December. There are Burgundy oaks, serviceberries, Siberian elms, and common hornbeams. In total, 1,760 m² of greenery will come to life, including 1,460 m² of urban forest and 300 m² of planted strips.

Traffic Closure for Three Nights

Before this new oasis of freshness is unveiled, there are still a few final touches to be made. One of the last phases of the work is taking place at the beginning of this week. According to information from Parisien, from February 23 to 26, the City of Paris is beginning the marking of the ground and the .Installation of traffic lights. These operations will require the closure of the square to traffic, and this will last for three nights, from 9 PM to 6 AM

To successfully carry out the installations, six streets leading to Colonel Fabien Square will be blocked, specifically: boulevard de la Villette Nord at the junction with quai de Jemmapes, avenue Mathurin Moreau at the intersection with rue des Chaufourniers, boulevard de la Villette Sud at the corner of rue Burnouf, rue Henri Turot at avenue Simon Bolivar, avenue Claude Vellefaux at rue de Sambre-et-Meuse, and finally, rue de la Grange-aux-Belles at rue Juliette Dodu.

A final step is planned for later, regarding "the permanent resurfacing of the roadway," as stated by the central city hall and the district mayors in a joint information letter, shared by Le Parisien. This will take place at the end of April, with no specific date provided at this time.
