The périphérique ring road keeps making headlines! While the speed limit was lowered to 50 km/h in October 2024, it's now the Olympic lanes that are set to change. Starting from March 3rd, these lanes, originally created for the Olympic Games, will be reserved exclusively for vehicles with at least two people inside. The périphérique, as well as parts of the A1 and A13 motorways, will be affected.


Reducing the number of vehicles on the road carrying only one person

During the entire period of the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, lanes will only be accessible to accredited vehicles heading to the events.

Starting from the beginning of March, the left lane will be exclusively available for carpool vehicles carrying at least two people, public transport like buses, taxis, emergency vehicles and law enforcement, individuals with a mobility inclusion parking card, and motorcycles riding in between lanes. The goal of this measure is to combat “single occupancy driving” – which involves 80% of users – and thus reduce CO2 emissions by half. It’s a way to lower air pollution, and also noise pollution.


The first fines will be issued starting in May

This regulation will be enforced from Monday to Friday between 7:00 AM and 10:20 AM, and from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A diamond sign will...

White» will be lit up on the signs, indicating to users that the lane is exclusively reserved for the previously mentioned vehicles. If it doesn’t appear, all users can use the left lane. 

A first phase of control by artificial intelligence will be carried out starting March 3. If a person is alone in their vehicle, a message will appear on the variable message signs indicating that they need to change lanes. For now, no fines will be issued. However, starting May 1, video enforcement will be applied, and users in violation may face a fine of €135.
