It’s no longer a secret that for the past few years, cars are no longer welcome in the streets of the capital. With massive pedestrianization, increased parking fees, and the dominance of bicycles, it’s not easy for Parisian drivers anymore. And things are not expected to improve by 2026, as the space for cars will be further reduced to enhance pedestrian safety. Let’s explain.

Enhancing Visibility

There’s a little shake-up in the Parisian landscape. In a few months, it will be prohibited to park less than five meters from a pedestrian crossing. This measure will affect all types of vehicles.

torisés, and concerns no less than 20,000 places across the capital. Behind this ban lies a simple project: to increase the visibility of pedestrians—both for them to see and to be seen—in order to limit the risk of accidents. Indeed, in 2024, the capital mourned the loss of no fewer than 14 pedestrians in traffic accidents. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case, as during the same period, there were no less than 442 across France.

A Setup Before 2027

This new measure, which applies nationwide, is set to be implemented in all municipalities in France before January 1, 2027. A gradual removal of parking spaces is expected to take place within the capital in the coming months. As for the reclaimed spaces, the government encourages transforming them into bike parking areas to promote soft mobility, or even into green spaces, using planters or small green areas. And for the stubborn drivers, watch out for your wallet, as the fine will still cost you €135. (reduced to €90 if paid immediately). Come on, you’ll see, the metro isn’t so bad.
