It’s no secret, in the French capital, thefts are common. We hear about it constantly throughout the day on public transport. However, we were still a bit surprised to learn that not only did Paris make it to the global podium of cities most affected by this issue, but it even reached the top spot.
Testimonies that leave no doubt
To establish this alarming finding that is nevertheless undeniable, the platform Radical Storage turned to the internet, specifically Google reviews, to see which cities were mentioned the most when the words “theft,” “scam,” or “fraud” were mentioned. In total, over 13,000 comments were analyzed.

Indeed, according to the study, 16.5% of mentions referring to theft or similar incidents are related to the French capital. Among the most frequent scams described by internet users are the bracelet scam, fake taxis, unfair exchange rates, or pseudo-fundraising for charities. But before we start complaining, let’s remember that Paris is the city that welcomes the most tourists in the world, and that the figures presented aren't necessarily proportional!
A Global Plague
Even though the capital clearly leads the ranking with this percentage – and once again, we should take this information with a grain of salt – it is not the only one experiencing thefts. In fact, you can find right .behind Paris the city of Rome, with a lovely 10.3% of mentions, then Barcelona at 5.3%. And if we talk only about flights, leaving aside scams and other manipulations, it’s the city of Orlando that comes out on top, with 12.5% of mentions!

Fortunately, for scared tourists, there are still a few well-known destinations that are just the opposite when it comes to their safety. In France, if you want to travel with peace of mind, head to Nice, where the overall rate is just 0.1%. And if you’re dreaming of more distant travels, then take a trip to Muğla, Turkey, or Shanghai, which also has a rate of 0.1%. In the meantime, we'll leave you with the full study right here.
