The Editor

Last January, the Musée d’Orsay celebrated its 40th anniversary with an unprecedented immersive show. Still, amidst the celebrations, it’s time for the institution to give itself a second youth. The renovation project, which will last until summer 2028, has two simple goals: to improve visitor reception and to enhance the building's energy efficiency. So what can we expect during the construction?

Yes to renovations, but no closures

First things first, we want to reassure you: yes, the former Orsay train station will undergo renovations for two years, but don’t panic—the entire collection of the museum will be accessible without restriction for the whole duration of the renovations. In fact, most of the changes will happen at the level of...and the entrance, and outside. First mission: renovate the slab located in front of the museum, which has serious waterproofing issues, affecting both the institution and the RER station located below. Then, the entrances and exits of the museum will be redesigned to be separated into two distinct entities. Throughout the construction period, temporary entrances and exits will be set up on the Seine side, where the future exit and the bookstore will soon be located.

A Program That's Always Top-notch

Rather than being hindered by its renovation work, the museum hopes to continue attracting just as many visitors during these two years of construction by offering us an extremely enticing program. First off, the institution will invite us to dive into the history of the Statue of Liberty, and even more importantly, into the world of painter Renoir with two exceptional exhibitions. One will focus on his drawings, a part of his work that is still too little known, while the other will explore his relationship with love, a universal and timeless subject. Classes, lectures, concerts, and workshops will also take place throughout this anniversary year, which promises to be grand!
