If you're the lucky owner of a four-legged companion, you might need to be extra vigilant in the coming months. The candidate for the municipal elections, Rachida Dati, considers pets in the capital a central part of her program. On Wednesday, January 14, 2026, in a press release, she listed a series of proposals to better include pets in Paris.

A hefty fine for failure to comply

€300 is the proposed fine by Rachida Dati for not cleaning up after dogs. Currently, the cost of this ticket is €135. This initiative aims to better hold pet owners accountable. It also plans to ensure that cleaning bags are mandatory.

Animal welfare prioritized

Fortunately, increasing the fine amount already in place isn't the only goal of the candidate. She would like to allow access to c...Dogs on a leash in all the parks in Paris, unlike the current situation where only 163 green spaces in Paris are accessible to these animals. Additionally, the creation of « Paris 4-legged trails » and dog parks in every district of the capital is planned, allowing for dogs to be unleashed safely.

For people in financial difficulty, Rachida Dati wants to propose a veterinary voucher that would be accepted at certain veterinarians who offer lower rates. « Without collective organization, animals often become a source of difficulty for their owners », she states. The candidate plans to sign an agreement with the Paris prosecutor's office to ensure that animal mistreatment is seen as « a warning sign that could indicate other forms of domestic violence ».
