In recent years, as smartphones have been developing at lightning speed and taking up more and more space in our lives, a battle has started to restore the nobility of reading. Free book distributions, XXL book boxes, operations are multiplying. And it’s in this same spirit that the new project from the city of Saint-Denis is taking shape: turning over 5,000 m² into a true temple of reading.
Heritage and modernity united
Behind this project, there’s a monumental construction to renovate the original building, but also to add an extension for even more space. It’s a wonderful opportunity to breathe new life into this building imagined in 1960 by André Chatelin, chief architect of the PTT who also worked on the
The works of the National Library of France (BnF). This project, led by the city of Saint-Denis, but also Plaine Commune, the local administration of Seine-Saint-Denis, is a “powerful lever to revitalize our downtown and enhance its attractiveness,” declared the mayor of the city (and president of Plaine Commune) Mathieu Hanotin.A Saint-Denis, 20 millions d'euros pour transformer l'ancienne poste centrale en médiathèque

An Exceptional Project
According to the first (and rare) information we have, the ambitious volumes of the future construction will have more than 330 seating places. Similarly, the resource fund of this library should be quite substantial, with a catalog of over 125,000 references. Whether it complements or replaces the existing library in the city center, this new cultural spot will definitely represent an extraordinary playground for the locals… although they will have to be patient for now. Indeed, the project management studies will be launched in September 2025, with construction expected to start in May 2028, and a completion estimate to follow.
