It has more than 135 years of history and yet, the Moulin Rouge keeps finding ways to reinvent itself. The legendary cabaret in the 18th district has recently announced a major project: the renovation of a historic hall where the famous Mistinguett made Parisian audiences vibrate during the Roaring Twenties. More than just a performance space, it’s a piece of history that will enjoy a true renaissance.

A hall built 100 years ago

On October 6, 1889, the Moulin Rouge opened its doors to the public. The main hall hosted the first performances of the Cancan, including those by La Goulue. In 1915, a fire devastated the cabaret. This was followed by the reconstruction of two halls, inaugurated in 1924: the one we know today, redesigned by Henri Mahé in 1951, and the one where the famous Mistinguett triumphed with her feather and sparkle revues in the 1920s.

A hall with a thousand lives

Originally conceived as a classic Italian theater, this venue has taken on various roles over the decades: starting as a stage for Music-Hall shows, it transformed into a cinema when Mistinguett stopped performing there in 1929, and since the 1990s, it has hosted various artistic productions. The realization of this rehabilitation project is expected to take place by 2030.

Until then, you can still come admire the breathtaking show Féerie. Created in 2000, it has been performed every evening with 60 artists on stage. It welcomes around 600,000 spectators each year!
