We've all noticed the countless metal shutters closed in front of shops, or boutiques that open on a street corner and shut down after a few months. As part of its 10th survey, the Parisian Urban Planning Workshop (Apur) looked into the state of retail in Paris and published the first trends for 2026, before releasing a final report in December. In total, the capital is home to 83,115 shops, commercial services, bars, restaurants and cafés. A figure that proves Paris's appeal, but doesn't protect it all the same: facing the rise of online shopping, 510 establishments had to close their doors compared to 2023.

The success of restaurants comes at the expense of culture

The food sector, along with cafés and restaurants are among the businesses thriving best in the capital. Between 2000 and 2026, the food sector experienced growth of 14% with 994 new ground-floor locations. Pastry shops, chocolate makers, coffee roasters and ice cream shops are experiencing particularly strong growth, unlike produce markets, butcher shops and fishmongers which are seeing their numbers decline. On the side of cafés and restaurants

s, the growth is 24.6% with 3,159 new establishments. Currently, the capital has 15,990 cafés and restaurants, including 142 new coffee shops.

Health and beauty are also standing out with a 26.2% increase. While in 2000, 2,393 establishments in these fields were recorded, in 2026, there are 3,020. On the other hand, for other sectors, the decline is more pronounced: department stores, personal goods, home furnishings, culture and leisure, DIY-gardening, agencies, auto-moto, and hostels and youth hostels have decreased by 4% (personal services) to 48.9% (auto-moto). Bookstores are heavily impacted: 38 establishments have closed in just three years.

The 11th, district of temporary shops ?

Between 2023 and 2026, it's inthe 11th where shops have closed the most: 120 fewer have been counted. However, over the period from 2000 to 2026, it's in the 1st arrondissement that the decline has been most significant, with a drop of 568 establishments. The 15th comes just after with 493 fewer shops.

A large number of vacant premises

The number of vacant commercial spaces has never been so high. In April 2026, there are 621 more than in 2023, that is to say 9,725 compared to 9,104. In the 2nd and 18th arrondissements, vacancy rates stand at 15.6 and 15.1%. While it declines in five arrondissements, it increases in 15 others.
