For the past few weeks, summer closures have been in full swing in the capital. However, the one set to begin this Wednesday, July 22, marks the start of a new era, as it signifies the closure of one of the biggest stations in the capital until 2034… Let us explain.

These are going to be some complicated years ahead for all the travelers of this Parisian station, starting tomorrow. What’s causing this? A massive construction project at the République, beginning on wednesday, July 22, 2026, and it's expected to last until 2034. Yes, you heard right, 2034! On the agenda: a successive shutdown of all lines, lasting over one year each time. If you live around here, we recommend you start revising the layout of the capital to find some alternative routes.


More than necessary work

Every day, the underground of the capital is turning into a true anthill, bustling with hundreds of thousands of travelers using public transport,

favoring certain stations for their location or connections. Among the most frequented is République, served by 5 lines (3, 5, 8, 9, and 11), which sees no fewer than 250,000 users passing through each day. This level of traffic has significant consequences on the state of the underground station. Especially since, following the renovation of the square above it 13 years ago, the station has been struggling with serious water infiltration issues.

In light of this situation, the RATP has decided to tackle the problem head-on, by envisioning a massive project to rehabilitate the infrastructure weakened by water, as well as to address the increased number of passengers. The agenda includes the installation of a shield, renovation of arches, floors and ceilings, enhancement of lighting and signage, and finally, reorganization of passenger flow within the station, to ensure the safety and comfort of everyone.


8 years of happiness ahead

This results in a colossal construction project, which the Paris transport authority has decided to carry out line by line, in order to minimize disruptions as much as possible. A double-edged sword, as it allows the station to remain partially open but also...However, this implies a series of works that might feel never-ending, as it will last no less than 8 years. So we’re kicking things off starting tomorrow, Wednesday, July 22, 2026, with line 8, all the way until spring 2027. Next up is line 9, between 2028 and 2029, followed by line 5 from 2029 to 2030, line 11 with work stretching from 2031 to 2032, and lastly, to wrap it all up in style, line 3 from 2033 to 2034. So almost a decade during which many times you’ll need to rely on the nearby stations. Come on, good luck to everyone, and let the Hunger Games begin!
