Just over a year ago now, line 14, also known as one of the best lines in Paris, and perhaps in the world, experienced a little revolution with its extension to Orly Airport. This transformation has certainly proven its worth, giving a new boost to the capital’s transportation system. And it looks like the purple line isn’t stopping here, as a brand new extension project is already being studied…

A long-awaited project

It’s been over 5 years now that Brigitte Vermillet, the mayor of Morangis (in Essonne), has been fighting to push for a study on an extension project for line 14. And at the beginning of July, victory – the State and the Île-de-France region!

Finally, they've decided to grant the wish of many elected officials in the department by launching a series of tests to assess the feasibility of this extension.

The idea, supported by Valérie Pécresse since 2021, is to open a station on line 14 in Morangis, just a few kilometers southwest of Orly Airport. This project would be extremely beneficial for the local residents, but it could also potentially be low-cost, since the city already has a maintenance and storage site where 72 trains of the line are currently stored. So, the question isn't about bringing the metro there (that's already done), but simply about filling it with passengers.

A Few Limitations to Consider

Even though, on paper, the project seems to be on the right track, a concern remains: the expected increase in passengers resulting from such a choice. Just a reminder, currently, line 14 transports...

nearly a million people per day. A number that is expected to increase following the opening of connections with the lines 16, 17, and 18. However, according to IDFM, there's no need to worry, as the trains have been designed for this capacity.

Anyway, even if the project is approved, we want to temper your enthusiasm right away; the opening will not be happening anytime soon. The final decision will not be made before 2027, with a definitive opening expected around 2040. There are also two other extensions currently being considered: the line 18 to Boissy-Saint-Léger and the line 4 to Massy, if PSG decides to set up its new stadium !
