Beautiful weather is back, and so are the good news! Scheduled for the very end of 2025, the new metro trains, named MF19 for « metro on rails ordered in 2019 », will actually arrive sooner than expected in Paris. The very first MF19, which will run on the entire line 10 of the metro connecting Austerlitz station to Boulogne, will be in service starting October 16th.

Protected videos, featuring wide doors, information screens, refrigerated ventilation, and USB ports, these new train sets represent a true generational leap compared to the MF67 currently in service... which will celebrate their 60th anniversary in 2028.

Total renewal of the lines by 2033

If, at first, only one unit will be put into service, 410 new MF19 train sets will be delivered in the coming months, for a complete renewal of the fleet on line 10 by mid-2027.

The next steps are already planned: the MF19 trains will be deployed by 2026 on the 7bis line, in 2027 on the 3bis and 13 lines, in 2028 on the 12 line, in 2029 on the 8 line, in 2031 on the 3 line, and finally in 2033 on the 7 line, according to IDF Mobilités.

It's important to note, much to the dismay of "vitrophiles" (those who love front-row views in trains): these trains will not be automated and a driver will always be on board. The only major difference? A so-called "boa" design, which allows free movement from one car to another along the entire length of the train.

New features but fewer seats

Only downside: if the head of Île-de-France Mobilités...is delighted about a significant increase in capacity (844 passengers for the MF19 compared to 425 for the old MF67), which is perfect during peak hours. However, the FNAUT-IDF, the federation of transport users, regrets the 16% reduction in the number of seated places. Specifically, in the "comfort" configuration for line 10, a car will go from 54 to 36 seated places.

A decision that raises questions, especially since the line 10 is the least used in the network, apart from the short feeder lines 3bis and 7bis, with a yearly ridership of 38.7 million passengers in 2023, which is four times less than line 1.

This sparks a debate: why prioritize this line for renovation, while busy lines like 13, 8, and 7 will have to wait between two and eight years to welcome the new trains?
