In recent years, third places have been multiplying in the capital and its surroundings, sometimes taking over unusual spaces. A old factory, a vacant lot, a decommissioned hospital, but mostly former train stations. This time, it’s an old underground station for public transport that has started a massive transformation this winter to soon welcome evenings, concerts and other cultural events.

A multi-million euro project gone awry

As we know, the Île-de-France metro is filled with “ghost stations,” stops that were built but never opened, or were removed during the transition.

Certain lines of information. Abandoned places that are now paradises for urban exploration lovers or for film studios. But in some rare cases, some are transformed to welcome the public again, though in a different form.

Here’s what’s happening with the SK station, a masterpiece of futurism from its construction in 1991. An entire line equipped with the SK system (hence its name), which was never opened to the public since the real estate complex that this shuttle and its two stations were supposed to serve never came to fruition. Initially, the RATP made an effort to maintain the trains by running them empty, but from the early 2000s, everything was completely left to decay.

A new cultural meeting spot just a stone's throw from the capital

We’ll have to wait until 2022 for the municipality to attempt to breathe life back into this place and for a decision to be made to transform it into a third place. And after years of proje Due to budgets and a bit of trouble, the station definitely closed its doors last November… to reinvent itself. On the agenda, two years of work to transform the SK station before a reopening scheduled for late 2027.

The idea is simple: to create a trendy cultural hub that's accessible to everyone, thanks to a diverse and thoughtful program. The different spaces will be revamped to include a virtual reality area and another dedicated to gaming. The cathedral hall will be reserved for nighttime fun: concerts, DJ sets… The old booths will remain to testify to the station's history, and a cave bar should complete the experience.
