It’s an understatement to say that the upcoming months are going to be quite eventful for users of public transport in the Île-de-France. With several large-scale projects planned to modernize the network, Metro line 4 in Paris could be one of the most affected starting early spring. The line will be totally closed between Barbès-Rochechouart and Châtelet from April 20 to May 1 inclusive. This is due to the renewal of track equipment, a heavy but essential operation to ensure the reliability of the service.

Goal: Modernizing the network

To minimize the impact on travelers, several bus lines will be reinforced during this period, especially lines 38, 39, 56, and 85. However, RATP recommends planning your trips in advance and allowing for a longer travel time.

These disruptions are part of a series of projects aimed at modernizing a particularly dense network in the Île-de-France region, considered the second most important in the world after Tokyo. The region's stated goal: to concretely improve daily journeys and enhance overall transportation performance.

A major new disruption is planned this summer

But the disruptions won’t stop in spring. The Line 4 will also face a new major interruption in summer 2026. From July 6 to July 24, service will be completely suspended between Les Halles and Vavin. In total, ten stations will not be served for almost three weeks, including Châtelet, Saint-Michel, Odéon, Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Montparnasse-Bienvenüe.

This disruption right in the heart of the line, which runs through Paris from north to south, is likely to complicate many journeys, especially for travelers connecting between the major Paris train stations. The alternative routes should be communicated by the RATP a few weeks before the work begins.
