Here’s some news that hasn't pleased internet users. Since November 13, Paris 2024 seems to have disappeared from social media. No Instagram account, no TikTok account. Just a little over two months away from the end of the event that marked the summer for the French and people all around the world, frustration is being felt especially by former teams: “We thought we would leave an intangible legacy, help future organizers, keep a trace in history like other editions before us, pass all that on to France 2030… But they preferred to delete our memories. And all our work », laments Julien Fritsch, former head of the digital strategy for the Olympic Games, on LinkedIn.

Have the followers of Paris 2024 been transferred to another Instagram account?

Why were these accounts closed? Where did those thousands of followers go? According to Julien Fritsch, the followers of Paris 2024 may have been transferred to the Olympics account, owned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Le Figaro notably points out that on November 13, the day Paris 2024's account was closed, the Olympics account gained 677,399 new followers. However, according to Pierre-Xavier Chomiac de Sas, a lawyer...Écialisé en droit du numérique interrogé par le quotidien, cette action est possible « if and only if an agreement has been reached between the IOC and Meta [in which case] the American giant would have had the opportunity to organize this transfer, and everyone is free to unsubscribe afterwards ».

A name change for the old TikTok account Paris 2024

To explain the merger of these Instagram accounts, BFM clarifies that this measure has emerged very recently. This explains why the accounts of the previous editions of the Olympic Games still exist, like the one from Tokyo 2021. On the TikTok side, since merging two accounts isn’t possible, the Paris 2024 account has changed its name and subscribers are now directed to a newly named account “ Olympic Games ”, owned by the IOC.
