On the morning of July 8, 2025, a fire broke out in Pennes-Mirabeau, near Marseille. The flames, which started from a car on the A552 highway, quickly spread to the surrounding vegetation. This afternoon, they reached the northern neighborhoods of Marseille. Several hundred firefighters from all over France, as well as many water bombers, are currently mobilized to try to control the fire. However, they lament that there are unfavorable conditions on the ground, and the rate of fire spread is very fast . A fire is also taking place near Narbonne. The Var, Vaucluse, and Bouches-du-Rhône have been placed on red alert for forest fires by Météo France.

Suspended transports

In the face of the massive clouds of smoke that fill the sky over the city of Marseille, residents – especially those in the 16th arrondissement where the flames have begun to creep in – are being asked by the prefecture of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur region to stay confined at home. At 2:45 PM, the Bouches-du-Rhône region moved to level 2 of the air pollution alert. Air traffic has also been halted: 14 flights have been canceled and 10 have been diverted, as reported by Marseille airport, according to Figaro. On the train side, it’s the same situation: as the flames now spread over 350 hectares, train services have been suspended. The A8 motorway...55 has also been closed until further notice.
