It was the most exceptional surprise at the start of the year 2026! Yesterday, Monday, January 5th, snow fell in the capital, bringing immense joy to Parisians. From the afternoon until the early evening, the snowflakes kept falling, creating a thick white blanket that inspired many to build a snowman on the sidewalk, or even to bring out their skis and snowboards in Montmartre.
Traffic severely disrupted
While the arrival of snow delighted many, it also significantly disrupted travel in the northern and western parts of France. In total, over 1000 kilometers of traffic jams were recorded in the Paris region.
Buses have been canceled, while the circulation of RER and Transiliens has proven to be particularly tricky, due to both snow and ice. This situation was still true on the morning of Tuesday, January 6, 2026. Six lives have been lost in road accidents. While the orange alert has been lifted in the twenty departments that were affected, the yellow alert remains in effect in a large part of the country.

A Thread 🧵
Paris is the City of Light, but, in these wintry photos, is the City of White. A blanket of snow adds a layer of magic to the already charming sights.
Which is your favorite season to see the sights of Paris?
