This is the news we feared the most. After the announcement this morning on Monday, June 30, 2025, that 84 French departments are under an orange heatwave alert, this afternoon, Météo-France has indicated that 16 departments, including several in Île-de-France, will move to red vigilance on Tuesday, July 1, marking the highest level of alert. According to the meteorological institution, « the peak of this extreme heat wave will be reached between Tuesday and Wednesday». In France, «maximum temperatures could reach 36 to 40°C with some peaks at 41°C », will be felt. The red heatwave alert had not been activated since 2023. 


Red Alert, what does that mean?

According to Météo France, a red alert « indicates an extreme heatwave, exceptional in its duration, intensity, and geographic spread, and has a significant health impact on the entire population, as well as societal impacts (drought, drinking water supply, modification or halt of certain activities…) ».

In addition to Île-de-France, this includes Aube, Yonne, Loiret, Loir-et-Cher, Cher, Indre, Indre-et-Loire, and Vienne which will be affected by this maximum alert level.


Prioritize hydration and cool places

In case of very high temperatures, it’s essential to stay hydrated. stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. Getting your body wet and keeping cool is also recommended. Avoid intense sports activities or going out during the hottest times of day. It is also advised to limit the heat entering your home by keeping shutters and curtains closed. 

On the business side, employers are required to take “the necessary measures to ensure the safety and protect the physical and mental health” of their employees, according to the Labor Code. The air must be frequently refreshed, fresh water must be provided, and workstations should be optimized. For construction workers, a minimum of 3 liters of water must be made available daily, work hours must be adjusted to limit work during peak heat, and shelters should be set up.proposed to workers.
