For several weeks, the Seine has taken on a curious brownish appearance. A somewhat unsettling color considering that the Olympic swimming events will be held there in 5 months. On X (formerly Twitter), users have not lacked creativity in commenting on this... curious phenomenon.

"I'm definitely going for it! Yes, I will." This Thursday, February 29th, Emmanuel Macron declared that he will take a swim in the Seine River during the Olympics, following in the footsteps of Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo who had done so a few weeks earlier. However, instead of the beautiful azure blue river that could flow through Paris, the river has been an unattractive brown color as it travels through the city. This change in appearance is concerning, especially since there are plans to create several swimming areas in the Seine by 2025 and athletes for the 2024 Olympics will have to swim there in just a few weeks. The current color of the river is mainly due to a significant rise in the water level, caused by the season. "A river consists of water and alluvium. These suspended alluvium come from the Seine watershed and therefore from the soil erosion caused by rainfall that eventually ends up in the Seine. This is what gives the water its cloudy appearance," explained Nathalie Carcaud, a professor at the Institut Agro and an expert in river landscapes, to Le Parisien. Julia Moutiez, a researcher at the CNRS laboratory CRH-Lavue, also clarified to the weekly that the color of the water does not necessarily indicate its quality.
