Undergoing a transformation for several years now – just look at the scaffolding and big signs that have us zigzagging endlessly – the Austerlitz station is set to unveil its facelift by 2027. This is the largest heritage project led by SNCF Gares et Connexion, aimed at modernizing this iconic station, which opened in 1840 and was classified as a Historical Monument in 1997. With a nod to its history, the addition of new shops and restaurants, and green spaces in the area, we’re excited to share all about the new look of Austerlitz station.
A Tribute to the Station’s History
Led by the architecture firm Wilmotte & Associés – known for the immersive Grand Palais and Station F designs, among others – the project for the main hall of Austerlitz station was unveiled in 2023. Stretching 280 meters and topped with a massive glass roof of 15,000 m², it has already been completely renovated to offer us natural light throughout!
of the day. The last stage of the construction site is already hinting at itself: a oval silhouette hidden behind the construction structures intrigues passersby.
This structure, unveiled in 2027, actually resembles a dirigible, according to Paris ZigZag. It's a tribute to the station's history, which in the 1870s, during the Siege of Paris by Prussian troops, was transformed into a huge balloon manufacturing workshop. With trains halted and roads cut off… the engineers and aeronauts of the time had no other choice but to come up with the only solution available to them: to communicate through the skies. In just one year, more than sixty balloons were launched from Austerlitz station, formerly known as Orléans station, carrying at least a hundred passengers, along with millions of letters and carrier pigeons.
A large-scale urban project
For the shopping part, Altarea Commerce launched the commercial aspect of the project last summer, featuring 25,000 m2 of retail space within the station, eA blend of fashion, home, culture, dining, and leisure. All coming together in a comprehensive project aimed at transforming the 7.5 hectares of the Austerlitz Paris Rive Gauche neighborhood, right in the heart of Paris. With new shops, hotels, offices, student and family housing, an auditorium, exhibition spaces, and reimagined public areas… the transformation is underway, focusing on a pedestrian-friendly and green approach. In addition to new structures and architectures, over two hectares of green spaces are emerging, along with 400 planted trees and rooftop gardens. It's all set to completely transform the neighborhood by 2027!
