It's the tragedy that shook the capital this week: during the night of Sunday, October 11 to Monday, October 12, 2026, the Enfants-Rouges market — Paris's oldest covered market — was completely devastated by flames. In just a few hours, 1,000 square meters of colorful stalls were reduced to ashes, leaving shopkeepers and Parisians in a state of shock.

Helping merchants set up elsewhere

On Monday, October 12, Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire announced the "temporary relocation of merchants" from the Enfants-Rouges market. At the moment, the details haven't been finalized yet, but the goal is to "relocate them near the Enfants-Rouges market, in order to preserve their unity, proximity and customer base ", explains Ariel Weil, mayor of Paris-Centre, to the Parisien.

A fundraising campaign launched to help fire victims

Alongside the City of Paris's efforts, the merchants' association has created an online fundraiser, open to everyone, to support the shop owners affected by the fire. Because the financial situation will be the biggest challenge. "Some [of the merchants] don't have business interruption insurance. Without cash flow, this directly threatens the payment of expenses and salaries for all the market's employees", explains Noémie Wagner, president of the market merchants' association and manager of a shop

all of fruit and vegetables, according to the Parisien.

Listed as a historic monument, this market was born during the reign of Louis XIII in 1615, making it the oldest covered market in the capital. For four centuries, it has brought life to the neighborhood, attracting tourists from around the world, and has become a favorite spot for local regulars who say they're already ready to support the market, wherever it may be located, whether temporarily or permanently.
