Outfit of the pandemic, a comeback of the trends from the 2020 lockdown or a video swearing that « this time, we won’t miss the chance to become influencers » : TikTok is on fire with more and more humorous videos about this disease from the Andes. But should we really be worried ?

2020 is back

Since the hantavirus was declared on the MV Hondius cruise ship, terms like « patient zero » and « contact case » are popping back up in our algorithms, and the WHO is trending again. It’s hard not to connect this to Covid-19, which locked us up at home 6 years ago, leaving us alone with our screens. In fact, it was this period that propelled TikTok to where the app is today : recipes, choreographies, and the first trends… The Chinese giant must…ucoup à this pandemic.

Naturally, users made the parallel instantly. Many dream of breaking through like Charli D'Amelio or Addison Rae back then. But what we mostly see are funny videos on this subject, set to the iconic music from the 2020 lockdown: it's the comeback of Doja Cat! While some have a traumatic memory of that lockdown, others are almost nostalgic about it.

What We Really Know

Whether you're holding on to some big grudges against Covid or you're one of those who would love to dive back in, you have every right to stay informed! You know it: cases are rising and three people have already passed away. But while the mortality rate is quite high at between 30 and 40%, let's not forget that the risk of contamination is much lower than with Covid. So you're only in danger if you're in very close and prolonged physical contact with an infected person.

Of course, this isn't great news, but there’s no need to panic. The World Health Organization estimates that, "it’s a serious incident […] but […] the risk to public health is low". An international health regulation is being put in place, and Vaccines are currently being studied, and we hope that the situation will soon be neutralized. In summary, there’s no need to panic, but we still advise you to stay vigilant: you never know.
