If the heatwave taught us anything, it’s definitely the importance of green spaces in the capital. So, what a disappointment it was for the residents of the 5th arrondissement when they learned about the closure of the new gardens at Val-de-Grâce…
Short but Intense
Closed since 2016, 16,000 m² of the Val-de-Grâce gardens have been renovated and modernized before opening their doors at the end of January 2026. Classified as historical monuments since 1972, this place needed some work to be regreened. In total, there will be 252 new trees added to the 180 that were already there, along with an expanded green surface, increasing from 61% to 72%. All of this for the modest sum of 9.6 million euros.
However, this year, underground disturbances were detected beneath the park, creating holes and a potential risk for park users.
This is due to the old quarries located beneath the gardens. So, since March 24, work has been underway to reinforce the basements. The Val-de-Grâce park has therefore swapped families, leisurely walkers, and sports enthusiasts for workers and construction equipment.Voir cette publication sur Instagram
A Late Reopening
Unfortunately, even though the City of Paris is doing its best to resolve this issue as quickly as possible, opening is not expected before at least the first quarter of 2027… The grounds are currently being re-evaluated and maintained accordingly so that the gardens can reopen to the public as soon as possible, safely.
On the side of the Parisians, there is confusion… After years of construction and millions of euros spent, they can’t understand how such a mistake could have occurred during the land analysis. A joking local even corrected the information poster by replacing the word "garden" with “*19-hole golf course”!
