When will we really be able to swim in the Canal Saint-Martin?

Last Saturday, a historic event took place in the capital: the Seine is now open for swimming, after 100 years of prohibition. However, right from the next day, Parisians had to put away their swimsuits and goggles, as a heavy downpour forced the City Hall to close its various swimming spots. It was only on Thursday, July 10th that the three little newcomers (Bercy, Bras de Grenelle, and Bras Marie) were able to reopen their doors. For the Saint-Martin Canal, though, we'll have to be patient a bit longer.

Swimming in Murky Waters

The joy was short-lived. After a historic day on July 5th, swimming in the Seine, open for the first time in 100 years, unfortunately had to be suspended. Fortunately, there’s good news for everyone, as this Thursday, July 10th,.

The three new swimming pools outdoors specially designed for the occasion have finally been able to reopen their doors, welcoming Parisians into the water.

A green light has been given by the city after a very cautious approach and numerous tests, especially looking for Escherichia coli bacteria that can cause rare but serious infections. Since the levels of these little critters rise in the water with rain, we had to wait for the counts to turn green again before we could dive right in to the river's waters.

A little sailor in tow

However, while we are absolutely thrilled to be able to splash about again among the mussels that inhabit the Seine, one swimming spot is still missing from the lineup: the Canal Saint-Martin. And what a bummer that is!

it's our favorite. But when can we splash around in the 10th again? The answer is simple, and for those who have been paying attention, it was announced on Sunday, July 6th: we’ll have to wait until Sunday the 13th, so just a week of closure, for the beach area to be accessible again. All that’s left is to wait a little... until the next rains!
