Founded in 1615, the Marché des Enfants Rouges has become a true institution in the capital, attracting Parisians and tourists by the hundreds every single day. A reputation greatly boosted by social media, particularly thanks to the famous sandwiches from Alain miam miam. Yet, this Monday, October 12th, the market stalls, colors and aromas were replaced by ashes, gray tones and sadness.
A fire contained
It was around two o'clock in the morning that the first flames appeared at the heart of one of Paris's oldest markets.
A massive fire that devastated no less than 1,000 square meters in the span of just a few hours, before firefighters finally managed to bring it under control. According to initial reports, absolutely nothing remains of the covered market, the metal structure having been completely destroyed. Fortunately however, the firefighters managed to prevent any spread to the shops and homes located around the market. With the risk of collapse still present, authorities continue to monitor the site.Incendie très violent en cours dans le centre de Paris https://t.co/pApvknjuFX

An Institution Brought Down
Throughout the night, striking images circulated on social media, showing spectacular columns of smoke and a menacing orange glow spreading across the surrounding buildings. And despite the firefighters' swift intervention, around twenty shops within the market were completely destroyed, some of which had been established here for several generations. Measures should be taken very quickly to restore this central hub of Parisian life as soon as possible, classified as a historic monument since 1982. An investigation will also be launched soon to determine the causes of this tragic incident, which remain unknown for now.
Le marché des enfants rouges a été ravagé par les flammes cette nuit. Merci aux pompiers de Paris qui se sont battus en nombre. Soutien aux habitants du quartier, ainsi qu’aux commerçants.
