Learning about the history of Paris through its classes, an exhibition, or a book is one thing. But being able to experience it firsthand, through the eyes of a Parisian from that era, is something else entirely. That’s the completely crazy project dreamed up by Timescope, specialists in immersive experiences, which invites us this summer to travel through time and rediscover the history of the capital at the very places where it happened. So, how does this completely unique journey turn out?

A unique visit through the ages

The adventure begins on the banks of the Seine, at the level of the Louis-Philippe bridge. For one hour, equipped with two headsets, one virtual reality and the other a...

udio, here we go to the Pont Neuf, to trace over 2000 years of history, from the settlement of the Parisii to the opening ceremony of the Olympics in 2024. On the agenda, 1.2 km of walking, over 15 stops, and above all, a complete change of scenery, all without leaving Paris. At each stop, you just need to put on the VR headset in front of your eyes, like a pair of binoculars, to instantly transform the surroundings.

Right from the first time capsule, let me tell you, the effect is immediate! Around us, in 360°, stretch the marshes (which later gave their name to the Marais district) while the first humans settle on what will eventually become the Île de la Cité. And it’s simply mind-blowing. From the creation of Lutèce to the Renaissance, passing through the Black Death, the construction of Notre-Dame, or the 1910 Seine flood, every tableau is striking in its realism and precision.

An exceptional realization

What stands out most from this stroll, accessible to everyone from the age of 8, is the precision of the images presented. And for good reason, all of them have been created with specialists, after consultations...

of archives, of land registries and other documents that trace the history of the capital, so that we can immerse ourselves as closely as possible to the reality. We particularly note the importance given to costumes and architecture.

Next, we have to admit that we were sometimes left speechless by certain pretty spectacular scenes, like the fire at the Pont-au-Change in 1621, the accelerated construction of Notre-Dame, or even the aerial views of the capital that punctuate the visit (watch out, there's a slight risk of vertigo ahead). With headsets firmly in place for a total and continuous immersion, we zip from one era to another in the blink of an eye, to rediscover Paris in a memorable way.

The only little downside is that we sometimes wish the VR segments were a bit slower, as they don't always allow us to fully enjoy all the scenes unfolding around us. But it's a minor quibble!

detail, and we easily forgive them considering the quality of the organization, the setting, and the service. So, get ready to explore 2000 years of history as if you were there.
