Could France be a model for gender equality? This is what the report from the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), published on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, might suggest. To create a ranking of the 27 member states of the European Union, EIGE looked into six categories: work, money, power, knowledge, time, and health. And France is doing quite well!

It’s clear that France shines with a score of 72.5 out of 100. On the other hand, it shows a lower score of 62.6 out of 100 in the "knowledge" category, highlighting a gender segregation in educational paths. At this rate, it will take at least 200 years to achieve equality [...] in choices of fields, without biases or stereotypes, the report specifies. It's Sweden that takes the lead with a score of 73.7 out of 100. Denmark, Spain, and the Netherlands complete the top 5. The Czech Republic, Hungary, and Cyprus form the bottom trio with scores of 53.2, 51.6, and 47.6 respectively.
Many strides to make
While France seems to stand out on the European stage, not everything is settled just yet. Domestic violence continues to rise each year. In 2024, 107 women lost their lives at the hands of their partners, according to a study by the Ministry of the Interior. This is an 11% increase compared to 2023. Additionally, there were 403 attempted homicides, with 77% of the victims being women.
In .a report from the High Council on Equality between Women and Men published in September 2025 shows that 93% of adult victims of rape are women, 87% of minor victims are girls, and 97% of those accused are men.
