Mobilization works! On Monday, October 26, 2026, the government responded to the high school student movement that has been ongoing for several weeks by unveiling a series of measures, some of which will take effect starting in 2027. Here's a breakdown of the different announcements that were made.

Parcoursup is over
One of high school students' main demands was to denounce inequality of opportunity linked to the Parcoursup platform — where higher education course preferences are submitted. The government announced that from the 2028 school year, Parcoursup will be replaced by a new system co-created with high school students, teachers and ministers.
New places created in higher education
By 2027, 15,000 new places will be created for students, mainly in the Île-de-France region. There will be 10,000 in BTS programs, 4,000 in IUT programs and 1,000 in health training courses.
The effClass sizes capped
Classes of 37, 38, or 40 students are a thing of the past. Starting in the 2027 school year, classes will be limited to 28 students. For now, this only applies to sophomore classes in public high schools welcoming the most disadvantaged students. The measure should be rolled out to all public high schools starting in the 2028 school year.

4 billion euros unlocked
The government will notably lend 4 billion euros to regions so that educational establishments — middle schools and high schools — can be renovated and brought up to standard. For universities, an additional billion euros will be released.
Increasing scholarships
Student financial hardship continues to grow as the cost of living skyrockets. Scholarships based on social criteria will therefore be increased in line with inflation.
New positions created and teachers hired
The shortage of teachers is a major problem. To address this, the government is planning to create
500 new teaching positions — particularly to cap second-year class sizes. In addition to the 3,000 substitute teachers recently assigned by the Education Minister, Édouard Geffray, 920 additional positions will be created.200 people will also be recruited to support young people with mental health matters.
A one-hour lunch break and reduced continuous assessment
Students will have a minimum one-hour lunch break. Regarding continuous assessment, it will be shortened to give students breathing room during the school year. Timetables will be rethought to be better organized.
