A huge cool oasis of more than 6,000 m² soon to be built in the 13th

A brand new 6,500 m² garden is set to open in the coming months, right above the railway tracks at Austerlitz Station. This cool oasis on the border between the 13th arrondissement and Ivry-sur-Seine has been designed to combat the intense summer heat waves we’ve experienced this year.

In recent months, French weather has broken all records, treating us to the most intense heat waves ever recorded. A real wake-up call that's pushing the city of Paris to take increasingly important measures to fight climate change. Among these initiatives is the creation of a garden plaza in the 13th arrondissement, at the end of avenue de France, on a platform overlooking Austerlitz train station's tracks.


A much-needed oasis of cool

If you've already spent time in the 13th, around the BnF, you know that the area is mainly made up of fairly recent buildings, making it a modern neighborhood, certainly, but

mainly mineral. A lack of greenery that residents and workers paid the price for this summer. Fortunately, this brand new project, led by Lion Studios, could well change things in the future.

The goal is straightforward: create a garden on one-third of the concrete slab measuring 1 to 2 meters thick that overlooks the tracks, taking into account a number of factors, including the weight of plants (and how it changes over time), as well as wet soil when it rains. That said, within a few months, over 70 trees should be planted there, to bring shade and cool down the area.


A complete project

Beyond this garden, the rest of the slab will also be transformed, with the implementation of a real estate project offering no fewer than 140 new affordable housing units. And while you'll have to wait between two and two-and-a-half years (delays not included), the transformation is already thrilling the residents of this booming neighborhood

the mutation, which welcomes both offices and shops of all kinds, workers and students settled in the various residences in the area.
