For the past few years, successive governments have been waging a relentless war against insurance fraud. This also involves the Social Security service, primarily represented by the Vital card. Until now, it was essential to present this holy grail to be immediately exempted from certain costs during a doctor's appointment or a visit to the pharmacy. But that was before. In response to various issues related to the Vital card, the government wants to implement a very specific solution: the dematerialization of this document. But how exactly does it work?

A gateway to the entire France

We've all experienced that moment of distress when we're desperately searching for a card in the bottom of our pocket, our handbag, or our...

wallet. Whether it's your identity card, your Navigo pass or your Vitale card, it's always such a hassle. Fortunately, for these last two, that's ancient history, because while the transport ticket has been accessible on smartphone for a little while now, it's time for the health card to go digital.

While it’s not exactly new, since this system has already been tested since 2023, the exciting news is that it’s now open to all registered users of the Social Security system. Indeed, while you initially had to have a France Identité profile, as of Tuesday, November 18, 2025, this requirement is gone, and all French citizens can embrace the digital age.

Super simple setup

So, how does it work exactly? Well, to be completely honest with you, it’s incredibly easy. All you need to do is download the Ameli app from the Health Insurance system, and then log in. Once you do,

Once this first step is completed (and so far, no big challenges), you need to have your Vitale card, a form of identity and a valid email address. After the security verification of your identity is finished (and it only takes a few minutes), you're all set! You'll now have a brand new digital card! Not a fan of digital stuff? No worries, the physical card is of course still active.
