Bicycle: after the Tour de France, is a new 100% Parisian race coming soon?

This weekend, the Tour de France wrapped up in the streets of the capital, featuring a triumphant new route along Rue Lepic. It was a moment of joyful celebration that surely inspired Mayor Emmanuelle Grégoire, who expressed her desire to create a brand new event.

Two years after the Paris 2024 Olympics, runners took off yesterday — and for the second consecutive year — in the streets of Montmartre before a much-anticipated finish on the Champs-Élysées. Parisians and tourists gathered in large numbers for the occasion, providing us with exceptional images. A lively and festive atmosphere that Emmanuel Grégoire — a passionate advocate for biking, who even celebrated his victory at Vélib — aims to recreate as soon as possible.


Paris, the new cycling capital?

«I wish to create (...) a grand Parisian classic». These were the words of the PS mayor of Paris on Sunday, July 26, 2026, during the finish of the Tour de France, at the microphone of franceinfo.

During this announcement, made just after he himself climbed the Montmartre hill on one of his essential blue Vélib' bikes, he expressed his intention to create a "professional criterium", which could be accompanied by an amateur ascent, similar to the Marathon for All introduced during the Olympics. This project would finally place Paris among the world's cycling capitals, as the enthusiasm for this mode of transport has exploded in recent years.


What’s the timeline for the race ?

For now, the new member of the City Hall hasn’t provided a specific date for launching this project, only sharing that he hopes it will happen during his term. For the organization, Grégoire might reach out to Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the team behind the Tour de France and Paris-Roubaix, which has just lost the bid for the upcoming Paris Marathon and now has plenty of time on their hands (quite literally!). They are a company with the necessary experience, so they could organize what could become the new must-see event in international cycling.
