You walk through the door of what you imagine to be a place of worship, and there, surprise: what you see in front of you looks nothing like rows of pews facing a prayer altar. In France, many churches, chapels, and other religious monuments are left abandoned. These are deconsecrated places, with unique architecture, that some choose to transform to give them a new dimension, more festive or sporty.

Deconsecrated places of worship transformed across the Hexagon

A luxury hotel in a chapel in Nantes, a nightclub in an old religious building in Angers, a cinema in a church in Bordeaux… And in Paris? Well, the capital isn't lagging behind. Directly...tion on the 8th, rue de Saint-Pétersbourg where Climbing District set up its third climbing gym in Paris in 2022. Gone are the white walls and minimalist decor: here, it’s an old chapel that has been transformed into a climbing hall, with routes reaching up to 13 meters high.

From Paris to Issy

In Île-de-France, the transformation of churches isn’t just happening in Paris. In Issy-les-Moulineaux, there’s a bar called Monastic, which has sprouted up in a deconsecrated 19th-century chapel. This establishment blends the vibes of a rum bar and a speakeasy, enveloping you in an intimate neo-Gothic atmosphere. Instead of wooden pews, you’ll find plush, elegant armchairs. The choir, the tabernacle, the statues, and the original moldings have been preserved, allowing you to embark on a journey between the past and the present, and enjoy a truly unique experience
