The Gaîté Lyrique is announcing its return! The teams at the cultural center were handed back the keys to the venue last May – after a 100-day occupation by young unaccompanied migrants this winter – and shared this news on WednesdayJune 4 as they gradually resume their activities. Despite an uncertain future and the City of Paris's “abandonment”, which does not want to participate in the economic recovery, the institution is bouncing back!

The Gaîté Lyrique in “great danger”

Last December, the Gaîté Lyrique had to close its doors until further notice, following the occupation led by the collective of young people from Parc de Belleville, which brought together nearly 500 minors.

isolated with no housing solution in the middle of winter. After managing a tense situation on-site for over 3 months, the authorities carried out the evacuation of the place in March, not without violence

Five months after the closure, the City of Paris finally handed the keys of the establishment back to the teams in May, accompanied by a somewhat disappointing piece of news: the municipality will not allocate additional funds for the Gaîté Lyrique. A cold shower, as the survival of the institution depends on the “exceptional support” requested from the City, which owns the site and typically finances 30% of its own revenue. Despite this “about-face”, the Gaîté Lyrique, certainly in “great danger”, is not locking its doors, continuing the dialogue and.try to lift your head out of the water.

A Gentle Reopening

Since Wednesday, the Gaîté Lyrique is gradually resuming its activities, reports Le Parisien, particularly by welcome a few events.Private events (mainly organized by private companies and institutions), but also allowing the return of its regular residents including the Ukrainian Institute in Paris and the independent media Kommune and Streetpress. An open call for applications will be published on social media this month to allow new residents to join the space.

On the cultural programming side, festivities are gently starting up again this June, but for now outside the walls, in partner cultural venues around Paris. The Gaîté Lyrique has announced that it aims to welcome Parisians in person at the start of the next school year, with, as usual, plenty of concerts, festivals, debates, and screenings on the agenda. See you next September on Rue Papin!
