In the capital and Greater Paris, the number of cyclists is on the rise! For ecological or economic reasons, this mode of transport attracts both solo souls and families. In October 2025, the Paris Urban Planning Workshop (Apur) looked into the development of cycling in the Greater Paris metropolis. This study was able to find out who the cyclists in the Île-de-France region are, what their habits are, and what motivates them.

Toward Gender Equality on Bike Paths

Could it be on bike paths that we achieve almost total gender equality? That's what the data revealed by Apur suggests. Between 42 and 45% of Parisian cyclists are women, marking a significant increase of 10% over the past five years.

There are several reasons that explain the reluctance of some to get on two wheels, such as the many trips to make in a single day or the fear of cycling with young children. According to a study by Apur, 40% of them report feeling unsafe on bike lanes, while 29% believe that road traffic is too heavy in the capital.

Associations to Make a Change

To address this feeling of insecurity, various associations are taking action. This includes Paris en selle and Elles à vélo, which advocates for more bike lanes serving daycare centers and establishments.

School routes. « The cycling network should be designed for everyone who is still hesitant to ride a bike », says Marion Soulet, spokesperson for the Paris en selle association, to Parisien.
